The materials for the courses have been prepared in accordance with the guidelines of the Minister of National Education of Iceland.
ICELANDIC A1.1
- Assessment for obtaining a certificate:
It is necessary to complete 80% – evening courses and daytime courses (75% attendance at courses held at companies) and actively participate in classes to receive a graduation certificate. If a student intends to apply for a permanent residence permit in Iceland with Directorate of Immigration, a minimum attendance rate of 85% is required. At the end of the course, there will be a short review of the course material. - For whom:
For those who are beginning to learn Icelandic from scratch and want to acquire basic communication skills for simple everyday situations. - Objectives:
The goal is to gain basic skills in understanding and speaking – to be able to introduce oneself, ask simple questions, and respond in everyday situations. - The course will cover the following topics:
• the alphabet and pronunciation,
• introductions, country of origin, language,
• simple questions and answers,
• basic verbs and sentence structures. - Additional information:
Audio recordings, short conversations, language games (e.g. Kahoot, board games) are used. Homework and exercises in pairs or groups are used as support.
ICELANDIC A1.2
- Assessment for obtaining a certificate:
It is necessary to complete 80% – evening courses and daytime courses (75% attendance at courses held at companies) and actively participate in classes to receive a graduation certificate. The course is a continuation of level A1.1 and is also suitable for those who already have a basic knowledge of Icelandic. Vocabulary is expanded so that participants can use simple sentences related to everyday life. The topics cover vocabulary connected to daily activities. Emphasis is placed on speaking, listening, reading, and writing, with a focus on everyday language and a variety of teaching methods. Grammar knowledge is also further developed in connection with the course material. - Objectives:
The aim is to use the language more confidently in simple conversations – to understand short texts and expressions used in everyday situations. - The course will cover the following topics:
• name, address,
• general polite expressions,
• numbers, age, time, telling the time,
• present, future and past tenses,
• names of days and months,
• shopping, prices,
• arriving in Iceland,
• adjectives and grammatical gender. - Additional information:

ICELANDIC A2.1a

Participants build confidence in using Icelandic through continued practice in speaking, listening, reading, and writing, using a variety of teaching methods. Grammar is taught in connection with the course material. - Objectives:
The goal is to understand the main points of simple conversations and to be able to express oneself independently on familiar topics. - The course will cover the following topics:
• a day at school, a day at work,
• vocabulary related to work,
• different words and expressions related to food,
• setting and clearing the table,

• visiting the doctor, parts of the body,
• reporting illness,
• buying medicine,

ICELANDIC A2.1b

Grammar is taught in connection with the course material, and the course also introduces students to Icelandic culture and everyday life. The goal is to increase students’ confidence and independence in using Icelandic. - Objectives:
The aim of the course is to develop the ability to understand and express oneself in a variety of everyday situations, including at work, when communicating with public offices, service providers, and in social contexts. Students practice using Icelandic both orally and in writing, with emphasis on practical and realistic language use. - The course will cover the following topics:
• appearance and clothing
• weather and seasons
• home, furniture, and moving
• verbs – 1st and 2nd group, present and past tense + þolfall (accusative)

The aim of the course is to develop the ability to understand and use Icelandic in different everyday situations. Emphasis is placed on practicing speaking and listening through realistic conversations, using the most common verbs in the present and past tense, correctly applying pronouns and prepositions, and describing people, daily routines, and situations clearly.
Participants will also gain deeper insight into Icelandic culture, everyday life, and the geography of Iceland. - The course will cover the following topics:
• vocabulary related to the home, furniture, and moving; use of prepositions (“við”, “með”, “til”) and personal pronouns,
• daily routines and schedules; regular and irregular verbs in the present and past tense,
• personality, emotions, and adjectives; use of reflexive verbs,

The course focuses on practical language use, listening comprehension, speaking, and consolidating grammatical structures in the context of working with children, colleagues, and parents. - Objectives:
The aim of the course is to develop fluency and confidence in spoken Icelandic, improve listening comprehension, and increase independence in communication. The focus is on the practical use of skills and knowledge acquired in earlier stages. - The course will cover the following topics:
• Hobbies and free time – talking about interests, activities, play, and shared activities with children.
• Listening and listening comprehension – listening exercises and understanding simple dialogues and stories.
• Family and appearance – describing family members, relationships, appearance, and everyday family situations.
• Communication with parents – discussing children, health, well-being, behavior, and daily events (e.g. illness, sleep, meals).

• the English alphabet and pronunciation,
• basic vocabulary and questions: What is your name? Where are you from?
• greetings and polite expressions,
• personal pronouns and basic verbs: to be, can,
• days of the week, numbers, and simple dates,
• practice in reading, listening, and speaking simple English,
• useful words and questions for everyday use. - Additional information:

The goal is to build fluency in simple conversations, improve grammar and vocabulary knowledge, and increase confidence in using English in daily life situations. - The course will cover the following topics:
• plural nouns – rules and examples,
• the verb have got – talking about family, possessions, and appearance,
• possessive pronouns and adjectives,
• present tenses: Present Simple and Present Continuous,
• adverbs of frequency and time expressions,
• vocabulary related to family, routines, and appearance,
• reading, listening, and speaking practice at a pre-intermediate level. - Additional information:
Teaching focuses on active participation and communication through dialogues, listening, reading, and group activities. The grammar content is adapted to the group’s level and connected to real-life situations.
